Scribbled Angelfish
Pomacanthus maculosus
Pomacanthus maculosus, the yellowbar angelfish (also called the half-moon, yellow-marked, yellowband or yellow-blotched angelfish), is a marine angelfish in the family Pomacanthidae. It is native to the western Indian Ocean and has more recently appeared in the eastern Mediterranean.
Family
Pomacanthidae
Avg Size
40-50 cm
Habitat
It occurs between 4 and 50 metres deep, living a solitary life in sheltered spots where coral and silt mix together.
Behaviour
Its diet centres on sponges and tunicates, with other invertebrates taken when the chance arises. Females mature at around 5.5 years and a length of about 21.6 cm, and the species may live up to 36 years. Divers often note it as curious rather than timid. It is a protogynous hermaphrodite, so older females can switch to male when males are scarce, and its larvae drift as plankton.
