Erg Abu Ramada

Overview

Erg Abu Ramada — universally known as "the Aquarium" — is one of Hurghada's most beloved dives, a compact oval reef just south of the Giftun Islands that packs in an astonishing density and variety of fish. Shallow, sheltered and endlessly busy with marine life, it earns its nickname the moment you descend into the swirling shoals. It is an easy site that works equally well for beginners enjoying the shallows and for photographers chasing the action.

The Dive

The reef is ringed by a sandy plateau sitting at around 12–15m, with the main coral block rising to within a few metres of the surface, so the whole dive is comfortably shallow. The eastern side offers the prettiest swim, running along coral pinnacles and dense hard-coral growth over the sand. On the northeast a separate erg glows with orange fire coral and pulls in big shoals of yellow snapper, while three large ergs on the western side are circled by young barracuda and yellow goatfish. A frequent highlight is an adult eagle ray that cruises the shallows, sometimes as high as 8m.

Currents are generally gentle, typically running north to south, which keeps the site accessible and relaxed. The shallow depth and easy conditions make it ideal for Open Water divers and courses, while the sheer volume of fish keeps everyone entertained.

Marine Life

This is a fish dive first and foremost: huge shoals of snapper, goatfish and juvenile barracuda, clouds of anthias and glassfish, and the resident eagle ray gliding through. Add masked pufferfish, moray eels, groupers, and the full reef community over healthy hard and soft coral. The orange fire-coral erg on the northeast corner is a particular magnet for schooling fish and a reliable photo subject.

Good to Know

Erg Abu Ramada lies about an hour south of central Hurghada by boat, near the Giftun Islands, and is often paired with El Erug or a Giftun site on a two-dive day. Note that it is sometimes listed as "Gota Abu Ramada." Visibility is usually a clear 20–30m. With its shallow, current-light, fish-packed character it is one of the best easy dives in the Hurghada area — a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for divers of every level.
