Habitat
The threadfin butterflyfish ranges through the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and eastern Africa (south to Mossel Bay, South Africa) to the Hawaiian, Marquesas, and Ducie Islands, north to southern Japan and south to Lord Howe Island and Rapa Iti, at depths of 1 to 35 m (3 to 115 ft). A single individual recorded off Italy in the western Mediterranean in 2015 was most likely an aquarium release.
