Chromis viridis is a damselfish whose individuals tend toward an iridescent apple-green and light blue, reaching a maximum length of about 10 cm.

Habitat
The species ranges across the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, in tropical and subtropical waters. In the Indian Ocean it occurs in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, eastern Africa, Madagascar, the Seychelles, the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, the Andaman Sea, Australia, and Indonesia. In the Pacific it is found from the Gulf of Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, and Japan to the Great Barrier Reef, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Polynesia, Melanesia, and Hawaii, and in the eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California south to Peru and the Galapagos.
Behaviour
Chromis viridis gathers in schools around Acropora coral heads. Its diet in the wild consists of phytoplankton, zooplankton, algae, copepods, and amphipods, and it will also eat eggs that fail to hatch. It feeds by ram-jawing.
