Gota Abu Ramada

Overview

Gota Abu Ramada is known to everyone in Hurghada simply as "the Aquarium" — and the nickname is earned. This is a small, shallow reef that concentrates an extraordinary density of fish into an easy, sunlit dive, which makes it one of the most popular sites in the region for training, photography and pure fish-watching. There is no wall to plunge down and no current to fight: just a coral block on the sand, swarming with life, that suits a first-time diver as happily as a macro photographer.

The Dive

The site is built around an oval coral block rising from a sandy seabed, with the main diving sitting in a comfortable 5–16m range — the reef shallows almost to the surface and slopes off gently around its edges. You circle the block and weave between coral heads on the sand, never far from the light. Hard and soft corals carpet the structure, and isolated coral pinnacles on the surrounding sand act as fish magnets and cleaning stations.

What makes Gota Abu Ramada special is sheer abundance rather than dramatic scenery. The water around the block is thick with fish, and the gentle conditions mean you can hover, watch and shoot without worrying about depth or drift. It is a textbook site for Open Water training, refresher dives and relaxed second dives of the day, and a reliable spot to log a long, easy bottom time.

Marine Life

The fish life is the whole point: dense schools of bannerfish, masked butterflyfish, sweetlips, goatfish, glassfish and cornetfish, with barracuda and jacks gathering in the open water. Morays tuck into the coral, crocodilefish lie camouflaged on the sand, and triggerfish guard their nests — give the latter a wide berth in nesting season. Eagle rays and turtles are seen passing through often enough to keep every dive interesting.

Good to Know

Dived year-round and ideal in any season for its shelter and shallow profile; visibility typically runs 10–30m. Gota Abu Ramada is reached by day boat from Hurghada and is firmly an all-levels site — gentle current, modest depth and easy navigation make it a favourite for beginners and a pleasant, fish-filled cruise for everyone else.
