Eel Gardens

Overview

Eel Gardens is one of Dahab's most loved shore dives, just north of the Lighthouse and a five-minute walk or short drive along the promenade. A favourite of underwater photographers, it pairs vibrant shallow coral gardens with Dahab's largest colony of garden eels and a cast of curious pufferfish. The entry through a narrow coral canyon and the easy, scenic topography make it a relaxed dive that rewards a slow, observant pace.

The Dive

Entry is over the reef plate and down through a nine-metre canyon that opens into a broad sandy area sloping gradually away. Following the reef on your left heading north, you drop down the slope to the eel colony, where the garden eels rise from the sand and slide back into their burrows as you approach. The route continues to a flatter section of reef around 18–20m, scattered with coral boulders and table corals where barracuda often patrol, before turning back along the reef wall. The return over 5–10m is the photographer's stretch: dense, healthy soft and hard corals, glassfish schooling in the entry channel, and — with luck — the rare seagrass ghost pipefish.

It is a shore dive best done at high tide and in calm conditions, as surface and underwater currents can pick up; there is a short surface swim of roughly 60m to reach the drop-in. The shallow, forgiving profile suits Open Water divers, though the current on busier days rewards a little experience.

Marine Life

The signature sight is the garden eels covering the sandy floor near the entry, waving in the current like synchronised swimmers. Add pufferfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, trevallies and barracuda over the deeper reef, blue-spotted stingrays on the sand, and the two large coral heads here support well over a hundred coral species — among the richest hard-coral growth on the Dahab coast. Keen-eyed divers hunt the shallows for ghost pipefish and other macro.

Good to Know

This is the Dahab Eel Gardens — distinct from the similarly named Eel Garden inside Ras Mohammed near Sharm El Sheikh. As a shore dive it is diveable year-round and is a regular choice for early-morning photography when the water is glassy. Visibility typically runs 15–25m. Dive it on a rising tide and in light wind for the easiest entry and the calmest sand.
