Napoleon Reef

Overview

Napoleon Reef sits at the southern tip of the Dahab peninsula, out in the area known as the Laguna or "the Spit," and is named for the Napoleon wrasse that patrol its waters. It is a compact, photogenic site built around a single tall coral tower, easy enough for beginners yet rich enough to keep returning divers happy. Because it lies a few hundred metres off the beach, it is reached by boat or zodiac rather than a shore walk, which keeps it quieter than Dahab's roadside reefs.

The Dive

The centrepiece is a large madrepore (stony coral) tower that rises from a sandy seabed at around 20m, separated by a sandy channel from a second, half-submerged reef. You can work the inner reef, circle the tower, or follow the outer drop-off, with the profile running from a shallow 5m down to a maximum of about 30m — there is no need to go deeper than the reef itself offers. Current is usually mild but the site lies roughly 450m off the beach, so a boat or zodiac drops and collects you, and on the outer edge a gentle drift is the natural way to dive it. Beautiful table corals dot the slope, with giant pufferfish often tucked beneath them.

Marine Life

The headline act is the resident Napoleon wrasse, frequently seen cruising the reef and unbothered by divers. Around the tower and channel you will find multicoloured reef fish, blue-spotted stingrays on the sand, and moray eels in the coral crevices, while the table corals shelter pufferfish and the odd hawksbill turtle passing through.

Good to Know

An all-levels site with generally easy conditions and very good visibility, typically 10-30m. Access is by boat or zodiac from Dahab — factor in that there is no mooring-free shore option here, so it is usually combined with other boat-accessed sites along the southern reefs into a half- or full-day trip.
